Tips every woodcarver should know

Wood carving Christmas idea

1. Gather the tools

The complexity of your project determines what tools you’ll need. For simple carvings, you will need a hammer, chisel, carving knives and sandpaper. You may also need some electric wood carving tools for more complex carvings. Lastly, stock some paint, glue and varnish for finishing purposes. Always keep these things in the same spot so that you can find them easily.

2. Choose the right wood

It’s also important is to choose the right wood for your project. Some kinds of woods are better for carving than others, so be sure to do some research before buying any wood.

3. Draw your design on tracing paper and then transfer it

One of my favorite tips is to draw your design on tracing paper and then transfer it on the wood by using carbon paper. This way you won’t have any mistakes while carving because you have an accurate sketch to guide you.

4. Carve in direction of the grain

Always remember to carve in direction of the grain and not against it! You will get much better results if you carve with the grain rather than against it because it’s easier and faster, but most importantly the wood won’t break into pieces or splinter off! So, always remember to look at the direction of the wood fibers.

For beginners, it’s best to start with a simple design. It is also easier to work with a larger piece of wood. This allows you to focus on learning the basic techniques and cuts used in woodcarving.

While working on your carving, it’s always a good idea to keep a carving knife sharpener nearby. As you carve, your blade will get dull very quickly. If you don’t keep it sharp, you could end up ruining the whole thing.

5. Don’t rush

There is no point in finishing a carving quickly. You should work without any time pressure and without attempting to produce something beautiful very quickly. Communicate with the wood while you are carving and create a comfortable pace for your work – this is the only way in which you can produce harmonious results. When it comes to wood carving, patience is a virtue!

6. Safety is essential

You are working with a wood carving knife and accidents are always a potential danger. Make sure to get used to holding the knife firmly and learn how to handle the wood itself. Always keep your other hand out of the way of the carving knife and wear a thumb guard on the carving hand. Thumb guards might take a while to get accustomed to, but they offer excellent protection against knife cuts.
